Throughout the World and Australia there are a lot of mountains including large landforms which are steeper than a hill, however there are no world wide definitions of a mountain. To describe a mountain it needs elevation, volume, relief, stepness, spacing and continuity. One Definition is that a MOUNTAIN is a 'a natural elevation of the earth surface which is higher than a hill; however, in the US a mountain must be more or equal to one thousand feet (take into consideration erosion), however a hill is five to nine hundred feet or a rolling plain is up to five hundred feet. A further definition of a mountain is a base of at least two and a half thousand metres, one and half metres or more with slopes greater than two degrees or one thousand metres or more with a gradient greater than five degrees. A final definition is that it is an elevation of three hundred or more metres with a minimum seven kilometre radius. Mountains aren't inhabited by much of the population because mountains are generally less preferable for human habitation than lowlands as the weather is often harsher. Additionally, there is little level ground suitable for agriculture as well as less oxyen at high altitudes nad less protection from the SUN and its UV (ultra violet) RAYS. The density of air decreases at higher altitudes, and with the thinning of the atmosphere, the insulating effect of the air decreases, resulting in less heat retention. Thus, air temperature decreases with an increase in altitude at a general rate, called the lapse rate. From this very interesting INFO it can be said that MOUNTAINS ARE COLDER AND COOLER, HARSHER, MORE DANGEROUS and MORE UNDEFINABLE than low-lands so be careful when you are on or going to or on a mountain.
